Every brand has a DOB

11.4.26
There's a moment. It doesn't always announce itself. It doesn't always come with a launch campaign or a shelf placement or a sell-through report. But it happens. The moment a product stops being a product and becomes something people actually want. Something they reach for without thinking. Something they'd notice if it disappeared.
That's the date of birth. And not every product gets one.
The difference between a product and a brand.

Most consumer goods are exactly that. Goods. They perform a function, fill a need, and sit on a shelf waiting to be chosen. They compete on price, on placement, on promotional mechanics. They're interchangeable. And deep down, the people running them know it.

A brand is something different. A brand is what happens when a product earns a place in someone's life, not just their shopping cart. It's the thought that crosses someone's mind unprompted. The feeling that comes before the logic. The reason someone reaches for one thing on a shelf full of alternatives without stopping to compare.

It's not magic. It's not luck. It's built.

Most products never make the leap.

This is the uncomfortable truth that most businesses don't want to hear. Having a great product isn't enough. Having good packaging isn't enough. Even having decent distribution isn't enough. The shelves are full of great products that nobody cares about.

The leap from product to brand requires something more. A point of view, a world, a feeling that is completely and unmistakably yours. It requires the kind of thinking that goes beyond what you sell and into why anyone should care. It requires someone to ask the harder questions. What does this brand stand for? What does it feel like? What does it say about the person who chooses it?

Most businesses skip these questions because they're harder to answer than "what's our RRP" or "how many SKUs are we launching with." But skipping them is exactly why most products stay products.

New beginnings are our business.

At DOB, we've spent years working at this intersection. The space between product and brand, between what something is and what it means. We've seen what happens when that leap is made with intention and craft. And we've seen what happens when it isn't.

The brands we're most proud of aren't just the ones that look extraordinary, though they do. They're the ones where you can point to a before and after. Where a product that was functionally fine but commercially forgettable became something people sought out, talked about, and came back for. Where a date of birth was given to something that didn't have one.

That transformation doesn't happen by accident. It happens by design.

So where is your brand right now?

Is it a product? Performing, functional, surviving. Or is it a brand? Felt, remembered, chosen. And if it's still a product, what would it take to give it a real beginning?

Every brand has a date of birth. The question is whether yours has happened yet.
